Fight With Impatience, Holding Back Your Expectations

Patience is a virtue that most of us could probably work on. In our world of hustle and bustle, it’s hard not to lose patience, but constantly managing our expectations can help in the long run.

Think back to the last time you lost your patience. Was it something you could change even if you wanted to? Quora’s Garrick Saito suggests that in order to be patient, we need to lower our expectations to a realistic level:

Impatience is the gap between expectation and reality . Close (or close) the gap and you will find that your patience will increase. Sometimes you can close the gap by getting better results rather than lowering expectations … Other times, you can’t do anything, like waiting in a traffic jam. Waiting “as soon as possible” or “trying to figure out a way out” will not solve the problem. Sometimes we need to accept more that we cannot control.

Think of all the things that you know make you impatient. What – if anything – can you do to make these things more effective? If there is nothing you can do, re-calibrate your expectations for such a scenario and think about what you could do to maintain those expectations. If you’re constantly impatient waiting in traffic, you may be able to leave early, or make the most of your time in the car, or take some time to realize how lucky you are to even have a car and a job. Accept the reality of the situation and you will find a way to accept it calmly.
