Don’t Let Yourself Cry With a Quick Pinch

There is nothing wrong with crying, but that doesn’t mean you want to do it in every situation. If you need to quickly recover, you can quickly tickle a couple of places on your body to reorient and stop the water supply.

Everyone has moments when they feel tears flowing but don’t want to draw attention to themselves. You can be at work, in the classroom, or in the store. Wherever you are, if your eyes start to water, Melissa Dahl of Science of Us NYMag suggests pinching the webbed skin between your thumb and forefinger or on the bridge of your nose ( which can help you wake up, too ). Pain distracts your brain just enough to focus on the present moment, and not on the sad moment that you may have been thinking about. You don’t want to pinch too hard – and it may not work in very emotional states – but it may be enough to buy you time before you can be in a more comfortable environment.
