Soldering Without a Soldering Iron With Steel Wire and Fire
If you need to do simple electronics repairs but don’t have a soldering iron, you’re not entirely doomed. You can use a variety of other tools, as well as just about any heat source, to solder whatever needs to be soldered.
In this video from Make YouTube channel, Jason Poel Smith demonstrates various ways to solder wires and electronics without using a soldering iron. Smith explains that soldering two wires together doesn’t even require a soldering tool, but if you have more complex work to do, steel is the best choice for a makeshift tool. Steel wire, screwdrivers, nails, and wrenches are all potential emergency soldering tools. Simply heat a wire or other steel tool over an open flame for 20-30 seconds, and then proceed to soldering as usual.
This is an older approach to soldering and you will only be able to solder a couple of points at a time, but it works if you’re stuck. It is important to be careful when working with open flames, so it is recommended that you take all necessary precautions. If you are completely lost when it comes to soldering, this is much easier to learn than you might think.
