Three Small Things You Can Do for Your Partner to Make Love Last Long

Long term relationships and marriage are hard work. But take some cues from older couples who have shared the secrets of keeping the spark after decades of living together: It’s all about little surprises.

Dr. Karl Pillemer, a gerontologist at Cornell University, writes in Psychology Today that the elders she interviewed for her books said the most effective things they did for their relationship was to develop the habit of doing small , positive things for your partners. Specifically, these are three types of gestures: surprises (spontaneous parties or buying flowers for a particular holiday), housework (doing odious work unexpectedly), and compliments (who doesn’t like positive reviews?).

Aside from sudden acts of kindness, there are many other things that go into successful relationships , but daily positive interactions are probably the building blocks. I like the article’s suggestion to ask yourself when you wake up what you can do to make your partner’s day a little happier.
