Practice the Basics of Your Craft, Even If You Think You Know Them
As you practice a skill, eventually the basics start to feel mechanical. You have used the skills from your first lesson over and over again, so practicing them is boring. However, the fact that you use them all the time is the reason you need to keep practicing them.
As the business blog Entrepreneur explains, every skill, profession, and profession has a set of foundations that are key to overall success. While you can develop these skills, you will come back to the basics over and over again. For this reason, they are among the most important skills you can practice. The entrepreneur cites former Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi as an example:
The methodical coverage of Lombardi’s foundations continued throughout the training camp. Each player learned how to block and hit. They opened the playbook and started on the first page. At one point, Max McGee, the Packers’ Pro Bowl receiver, joked, “Uh, Coach, could you slow down a bit? You are going too fast for us. ” Lombardi reportedly smiled but still continued his obsession with the basics. His team will be the best in the league at tasks that everyone else took for granted.
Think back to what you learned in your early lessons or your first days at work. This is what was considered important enough to start with. A better understanding of these concepts will help you become better. Adding new skills is okay too. But these are the ones you will need every day.
