Remember to Do the Usual Things When You’re Upset.
When you’re feeling overwhelmed or upset about something, it’s incredibly easy to get bogged down in it. Derek Sivers reminds us that sometimes the best thing you can do to feel better is to keep up with your day to day tasks.
Sievers describes several of his methods of dealing with bad situations, but ends his list with a very simple tip:
When I’m upset, I don’t feel like doing anything other than wallowing in it.
But despite this feeling, I brush my teeth, use dental floss, go to the gym, cook healthy food, take the kid to play, do the dishes, clean the house, clean up the mess, vacuum, pay bills, answer emails, take my vitamins, Do your laundry, play with your baby again, brush and floss again, turn off your computer early, turn off your phone, and go to bed early.
It’s so mundane, but it really makes you feel at your best. Things in life are ordered so I don’t have to worry about them.
At first glance, this seems very obvious, but in moments like this it is easy to forget how much better you feel just by performing the movements. Read Sievers’ post to learn how to deal with these shitty moments in life.
