Avoid Over-Thinking Outfits With a Stock of Essential Items

Most of us find it difficult to decide what to wear, at least sometimes. Building a basic capsule wardrobe can help, but some people prefer a little more variety. To avoid hesitating about your outfit, set aside space in your closet for clothes that go with anything.

Refinery29 calls this a “secret weapons store”. It mainly includes your most versatile items:

Set aside a section of your closet for the items you always gravitate toward first, and you can quickly create clothes out of them. Most of the time we panic in front of the closet, we spend choosing from a variety of options. If you only create a tiny patch of nine to ten strong hitters, it will be much easier for you to focus. Grab the first thing you haven’t worn recently and head into town.

I sort of implement this strategy, but I do it a little differently. I organize my wardrobe by separating the basic items that go with everything from the less versatile. That way, I know what to choose from if I don’t feel like thinking too much about what to wear. Sometimes, when I feel like putting a little more creativity into choosing an outfit, I take a “less versatile” pile.

Either way, the idea is the same: having a dedicated space for light items can allay hesitation about clothing. Read the full white paper Refinery29 for more tips.
