Include Potential Obstacles on Your Goal List

When you’re coming up with goals, a list ( or two ) is a great way to stay motivated. However, while you are making this document, you can create an accompanying list of obstacles that might prevent you from reaching your goal.

As Adam Duchis, productivity writer and Lifehacker alumnus, points out, every goal faces obstacles. Otherwise, these would be simple tasks. Identifying obstacles before you hit them can help you anticipate how to deal with them, or even get around them entirely:

Good planning can go a long way. This does not guarantee that you will achieve your goal – nothing will help – but it can help you prepare for the worst and overcome challenges along the way. When determining the goal you want to achieve, consider anything that might get in your way.

Identifying obstacles can also give you an idea of whether a goal is achievable. If your goal of starting a multi-million dollar company turns out to be unrealistic, then perhaps you can upgrade that goal to something more practical, like going to business school or getting a job at an existing company that does the job you want to do.
