If You Are Stuck With an Issue, Press 15 Minutes and Then Get Help
Jamming can be exhausting. You may feel like you can understand the problem if you spend a little more time on it. Unfortunately, the next thing you know you have wasted by making little progress. Next time, if you get stuck and are about to give up, take another 15 minutes and then ask for help.
During those 15 minutes, document everything you do so you can tell someone else about it. Take a lot of notes so you know exactly where you are stuck and provide relevant context and information to the people who are helping you. Finally, if you haven’t solved it after 15 minutes, ask someone for help. Show a colleague your work and tell what the problem is.
Remember, you are not being selfish when you ask for help. Your billable hours cost money to either your client or your company (and more importantly, it costs you time and energy), so banging your head against a wall won’t help anyone. Plus, you’re probably juggling with other projects or tasks and your time would be better spent elsewhere. Likewise, if you are faced with a creative challenge and an obstacle, change the task after 15 minutes .
