Resolve a Consumer Dispute by Writing to Your Attorney General
No matter how much you complain, some companies just won’t budge and take the right step. In some cases, your attorney general can help you solve the problem.
At Three Thrifty Guys, they remind us of your state’s attorney general’s consumer department. We’ve looked at other ways to file a complaint and get results , but this is a good final try.
The attorney general works on behalf of everyone in the state. They are less likely to participate in one individual complaint. The laws are different in each state. When complaints are about cars or licensed professionals, the Consumer Affairs Department has more authority to act. They are elected officials and their interests in consumer protection also differ. If elections are coming up, they have an incentive to please voters. If you are mailing a letter to the Attorney General, also send a copy of the company. Sometimes this is all it takes to resolve a dispute.
If the Attorney General is unable (or unwilling to) get results, he will still track your complaint and look for patterns. If enough people complain, they can start an investigation.
