Make Your Dreams Come True With the WOOP Method

You have two options in life: strive to achieve your dreams, or keep dreaming about them. The WOOP Method is a hands-on system to help you achieve wishful thinking. This is how it works.

Usually what you really want in life is achievable. The hardest part is figuring out how to achieve them. The WOOP method, which stands for W ish, O utcome, O bstacle, P lan, helps you pave the way for making your dreams come true. One of the best things about this method is that it forces you to plan for contingencies and prepare for your obstacles. Author and psychology professor Gabriele Ettingen explains how it works at Harvard Business Review:

Name a desire that is achievable or realistic for you – for example, to find a new client. Then imagine for a few minutes what would happen if that wish came true, letting the images flow freely in your mind. Then change things up. Identify the main obstacle within you that is standing in the way, and imagine it for a few minutes. Now for your plan: when faced with obstacle X, you will take effective action Y in response.

The next time you have a goal, desire, or dream that you want to come true, try the WOOP method. Write down your desire, outcome, obstacle and plan to make it specific and place it somewhere to remind you how you are going to make that desire a reality.
