Remove Ugly Popcorn Texture From the Ceiling With Water
Popcorn ceilings are ugly and dull, but are ubiquitous in homes built from the 50s to 80s. Here is a simple solution to remove this unwanted feature.
Popcorn ceiling is a spray applied to the ceiling that can hide the imperfections of the ceiling as well as reduce noise. It lost popularity in the 1980s after the Clean Air Act banned asbestos, and is now considered almost universally repulsive.
Removing the ceiling texture from popcorn is a simple process, but you must first check the ceiling texture for asbestos. Check your local building codes and read what the EPA says about asbestos before tampering with your ceiling.
Once you’ve determined it’s safe to remove the texture, you can start removing by spraying the ceiling with plain water from a spray bottle. Let the ceiling soak for a few minutes, then use a paint scraper to remove the popcorn texture. Collect old texture in a plastic tray and discard.
Wear safety goggles to keep debris out of your eyes. A breathing mask can also help, as small particles can become trapped in the air.
